JCHC Presents Our Creative Living Series

As part of our commitment to enriching seniors’ lives, the JCHC provides these adult education presentations to groups in Morris and Essex counties.

Residents of our JCHC communities have enjoyed these Creative Living seminars for years; now you can offer them to your senior group as well, presented by members of the JCHC team. Each seminar runs 30 to 45 minutes and the topics are varied and fun. Our Creative Living seminars are free to your organization.

Come find out some interesting and fun facts about this sweet confection beyond those boxes and foil wrappers.

The history of tea is fascinating and offers great insight into the history of our world. Since tea was first discovered in China, it has traveled the globe, conquering the thirsts of virtually every country on the planet. Join us for this interesting presentation and end with – what else? – a spot of tea.

This coffee lover’s seminar covers how coffee has played a role in the history of the world. Learn interesting tidbits about “cowboy coffee” and find out about kosher gourmet coffee shops in New Jersey in this interactive program.

Weathering the Storm: New Jersey Weather History
Do you remember the storms and hurricanes you experienced or heard about as a child? Are today’s severe weather events global warming or just the cycle of seasons? Enjoy this seminar that will explore fun facts about weather and dealing with storms and other weather conditions. Each attendee will receive a small “weather the weather” gift.

Honey and Apples – A “Happy New Year” Rosh Hashanah Seminar
Different types of apples and honey will be explored, as well as the history of how this tradition became associated with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. We’ll ask: Why the apple? Isn’t honey on the challah bread sufficient to symbolize a sweet year? What is the special symbolism of the apple that makes it the fruit that most graces our Rosh Hashanah table? Join us for this fun and interactive program.

What’s Lurking in Your Fridge?
Food safety is just as important as maintaining a proper diet and the right cooking utensils. Join Chef Mitchell Goldberg (JCHC’s Regional Dining Director) who will uncover all the “screamie meanies” that could be in your refrigerator or kitchen cabinets. We will end with a quick and tasty no-bake treat.

Covered Bridges of New Jersey – a Bicyclist’s View
Covered bridges are romantic reminders of an earlier era in New Jersey. Enjoy a PowerPoint presentation by a bicyclist who has traveled through these bridges, as you are taken on your own journey through history via New Jersey’s one-time famous wooden bridges.

Dog Sledding: The Rich History of the Inuit Dog
Canadian Inuit dogs were the mainstay of Arctic transportation for thousands of years. Because of their strength and ability to thrive in extreme conditions, these dogs were selected to power the first expeditions to reach the North Pole (Robert Peary 1909) and the South Pole (Roald Amundson 1911). This session takes the participant on a virtual dog sledding adventure as we learn about the history of these magnificent animals.
