Village Grand Opening – October 17, 2018

The grand opening of the new Village Apartments of the Jewish Federation was held on Oct. 17. Residents, JCHC leadership and staff, and invited guests toured the spacious new multi-purpose community room, saw one of the new luxury apartments, and viewed improvements that have been rolled out over the last 18 months (airy new lobby, renovated dining room and common areas, updated hallways on resident floors). Certificates of appreciation were given to the people who made it all happen and we all cheered when Site Manager Cheryl Kasye cut the ceremonial ribbon.

25th Anniversary of B’nai B’rith Federation House – December 11, 2017

The JCHC celebrated the 25th anniversary of high-quality senior living at South Orange B’nai B’rith Federation House (SOBBFH), with a beautiful event held on Dec. 11 at South Orange Performing Arts Center. There were remarks by local dignitaries (Patricia Sebold, a member of the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders and Sheena Collum, president of South Orange Village), Evan Carmen from B’nai B’rith International and Heather Critelli from LeadingAge NJ. Attendees also heard from long-time resident Lavinia Walker, president of the tenant association at SOBBFH, who shared the importance of senior housing and what SOBBFH has meant to her in her retirement years. The event also served to highlight the importance of HUD-subsidized affordable housing (SOBBFH and Jewish Federation Plaza offer affordable housing options for those who qualify). After the speeches, our residents and staff enjoyed a lovely private dinner to mark the special occasion. It was a great night!

JCHC Annual Dinner – June 20, 2016

What a wonderful time we all had at the JCHC Annual Board Meeting and Dinner, held at Crystal Plaza in Livingston on June 20. A beautiful touch to the evening were the floral arrangements that adorned the tables, made by our residents at the Lester Senior Housing Community. They got together the day before, and under the guidance of Megan Fainsinger from ARTS By the People, created 14 beautiful floral arrangements for the tables. Each centerpiece featured photos of the residents from all four JCHC communities. After the event, the floral arrangements were given to each community to enjoy. Committee chair and board member Roberta Zweifler expressed her gratitude for the residents that helped make the night a success.

As always, a highlight of the event was a performance by the JCHC Resident Choir, who delighted the crowd with a series of songs depicting a summer camp theme — Camp JCHC. Choir members all wore baseball caps with “Camp JCHC” written on the front; playing tambourines and dancing the hokey pokey, the choir encouraged the guests to join in the fun — and they did! Everyone enjoyed singing “Ballin’ the Jack” as Aggie, acting as Camp JCHC Activities Director, demonstrated the dance.

The choir also sang “Consider Yourself” and “Food, Glorious Food (from “Oliver”, with some original JCHC lyrics for the latter song), a medley of friendship songs including “Hiney Matov”, “With a Little Help From My Friends” (Beatles), “You’ve Got a Friend” (Carole King), “the Games People Play”(by The Spinners, with original words to fit the JCHC) and “Sing “by Joe Raposo. The audience was given song sheets and sang along with the choir for “Games People Play” and “Sing.” During a musical interlude, several residents got up to dance to Frank Sinatra songs.

What a great night!
